How we work

Eyes on the storm, for the people in its path.

WeatherTAK Radar is a volunteer storm-chasing and radar team based in the Mobile, Alabama area. We go into severe weather to document what's happening on the ground. Then we share it as live video, reports and free radar tools.

Why

Ground truth.

Radar shows what the atmosphere is doing. It can't show a flooded road, a downed line or a parking lot under water. Eyes on the ground can. We bring cameras and weather instruments into the storm so people outside it can see what's actually happening.

Everything we gather is public: live streams, chase videos, field logs and our radar app.

A chase, start to finish

How a deployment works.

  1. 1

    Watch the outlook

We follow the National Hurricane Center, the Storm Prediction Center and our local NWS office for days ahead of a system.

  2. 2

    Decide to go

We go only when there's a safe plan: a target area, escape routes, fuel and a time to turn around. If the plan isn't safe, we stay home.

  3. 3

    Deploy

The team drives into position with cameras, a vehicle-mounted weather station and live streaming. Updates post on our Live page.

  4. 4

    Document & report

We record wind, pressure, flooding and damage, and pass observations to official channels when they help.

  5. 5

    Share it

After the storm, the footage becomes a full video and a field log.

Where donations go

Equipment, and getting into the storm.

Every dollar donated goes to two things: the gear we use, and the cost of getting the team into position.

Equipment

Instruments

Weather stations, anemometers and barometers for real ground readings.

Equipment

Cameras & streaming

Weatherproof cameras, mounts, mobile hotspots and data plans to stay live in the storm.

Equipment

Vehicle safety

Tires, warning lights, recovery gear and repairs for the chase vehicles.

Deployment

Fuel & travel

Getting to the storm, often hundreds of miles, and back.

Deployment

Food & lodging

Staging near a system before it arrives.
